Abstract

In recent decades, many researches have been focused on the distribution planning, mostly on the medium voltage (MV) level. However, a considerable part of distribution system losses is pertained to low voltage (LV) networks, and the costs of MV networks are comparable with those of LV networks. Therefore, it is necessary to study this subject. In this paper, a new method is presented to determine the optimal placement of distribution transformers. This method determines the optimal location, size, and number of these transformers. A transformer loading above the nameplate rating is allowed without any influence on the relative thermal aging rate. This is carried out during peak hours to benefit from low load currents during off-peak hours. The proposed approach is applied to a test system consisting of 42 electric load points. It is observed that the proposed planning approach considerably reduces the total cost of the distribution transformer placement as well as the costs of the associated capital and losses.
